Can anyone rent a cottage for a self-catering break?
The usual rule is the at least one person in the group must be an adult aged 18 or over.
When booking a holiday cottage, the responsible adult signs a contract between themselves and the cottage owner or management company. This contract may be called a booking agreement or have another name, it may all be completed online but the end result is the same, whoever has signed for the booking is fully responsible for full payment and the condition of the self-catering property during the holiday.
Booking a cottage with friends
Groups of teenagers sometimes like to go on holiday together and stay in self-catering accommodation. An adult needs to stand as guarantor.
It is highly unlikely that anyone would allow a group of 16 year olds to rent a cottage on their own. For cottage owners, a holiday cottage represents an income; it is their business. Should anything untoward happen that results in the cottage or its furnishings being damaged, the cottage owner is put to a great deal of effort and expense in rectifying the problem before the cottage can be let again. Only adults can legally be sued for damage in the UK which is why cottage owners will not usually accept any bookings from teenage groups.
Occasionally, the booking is permitted if a parent stands as guarantor and accepts full responsibility for the behaviour of the group.
Group Bookings
Clubs often book large self-catering accommodation for short breaks, for walking, cycling or other purposes.
When a booking is made in the name of a club, the entire club is held responsible for the accommodation. If one member of the club decides to take home a towel as a souvenir then the club will be asked to pay for it. For this reason, it is important that each member of the group understands that they each share the responsibility.
Cheap Cottage Breaks
Self-catering is the cheapest form of comfortable self-catering accommodation..
Assuming that you don't own camping equipment, a cottage holiday can be relatively inexpensive because self-catering accommodation ranges from budget cottages upwards. Booking a simple 'no frills' cottage can be quite cheap if shared between a group of friends. Obtain a few more suggestions for cheap cottage holidays.
